An automatic mode setting method and a photographing apparatus using the same are disclosed. The automatic mode setting method of the photographing apparatus includes judging the type of recording medium, setting a recording mode corresponding to the type of recording medium, and converting a photographed image into a format adapted to the set recording mode to record onto the recording medium.
