A damper, or shock absorber having a base valve assembly 38 disposed between a working chamber 46 and a reservoir chamber 52, the base valve assembly comprising a valve body 120 defining a fluid passage 132, 134 and a valve disc 140 disposed adjacent the valve body. The valve body has a first land, a second land disposed radially inwardly from the first land and a support surface disposed between the first and second lands. The valve disc abuts the first and second lands and a clearance is formed between the valve disc and the support surface. Also independently claimed is a damper having a piston disposed within the working chamber, the piston forming a valve having a first land, a second land disposed radially inwardly from the first land and a support surface disposed between the first and second lands and a valve disc which abuts the first and second lands and a clearance is formed between the valve disc and the support surface. |
