The method involves activating a transmitter/receiver unit integrated in a housing of a meter e.g. water meter, by a mobile retrieval unit e.g. personal digital assistant, with a transmitter/receiver module. A consumer is selected by the retrieval unit, and the module transmits a coded request for a meter reading to the transmitter/receiver unit. The transmitter/receiver unit transmits a coded response for the reading to the module. The identity of the consumer is tested in the retrieval unit. Data in the received response is measured, buffered, processed and transmitted to a host system. An independent claim is also included for a system for retrieving a meter reading for a consumer.
