The device (1) has a climbing device (3) to be climbed along a tube for moving a cleaning device. A cleaning cup (4) is connected to the climbing device to accommodate an outer surface of a vertical stove pipe (2). A pair of endless belts (5) includes a chain shaped endless element (6), where the endless element and a friction element (7) are equal in distance. The friction element includes a curved plane (8) for forming a large contact surface between the endless belts and the stove pipe, where the friction element is made of rubber. An independent claim is also included for a method for cleaning an outer surface of a tube.
