<p><PICT:0910822/III/1> Apparatus for the automatic coating of articles includes a plurality of dispersing devices arranged to produce an adequate dispersion of coating material for the largest article with which the apparatus is intended to be used, and photo-electric control means for detecting the size and position of articles entering the apparatus and for switching on only sufficient of the dispersing devices for coating each article. As shown, tyres 7 of different sizes 7a, 7b are carried by supports 5 on a conveyer rail 4 through a protective casing 1 in which is a U-shaped cage electrode 3, which can be charged to a high electric potential. Two sets of spray-guns 8a, 8b, 8c and 8d directed into the interior of the cage, are mounted, at heights determined by the levels of the different sizes of tyres, near the exit end of the casing 1, and housings containing lamps 12a, 12b, 12c and corresponding photo-electric cells 13a, 13b, 13c, (not shown) are provided, aligned with openings 11 in advance of the cage 3. The cell 13a controls, through a relay and solenoid, the guns 8a and 8b, the cell 13b controls gun 8c and the cell 13c controls the gun 8d; the guns are switched off until the light from the lamps is obstructed, thus de-energizing the associated relays, and causing the appropriate guns, corresponding to the size of the tyre, to be switched on in advance of the tyre entering the cage 3. The control relays preferably include time delay devices which cut out the relays after they have been de-energized for a time equal to that required for the tyre to pass from the lamps and cells to about the centre of the cage, thus prolonging the operation of the spray-guns.</p> |
