The astaxanthin preparing method involves carrying out a reaction of xanthophylls, particularly zeaxanthin with an oxidizing agent in the presence of a catalyst of N-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine derivative in aqueous-organic medium. The oxidizing agent comprises halogenated, preferably brominated derivatives of hydantoinase and gold.
