The device has a concave shaped guiding surface (200) for guiding an ascending air flow driving light elements (61) of a mixture from a base (20) of a passage. The surface is formed on a flange (21) of the passage and is extended above the passage. An air injection system (3) is arranged on other flange (22) of the passage and is arranged to deliver air with a circular or helical trajectory in the passage, where the air is insufflated in direction of the base. A retention unit (4) is provided on the flange to maintain the heavy elements (62) of the mixture at the level of the base (20). An independent claim is also included for a method for sorting air to extract light elements of the waste mixture.
