METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR A FAST HANDOVER IN A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A method and an apparatus for fast handover in a communication system are provided to reduce the handover delay time of an MS in the communication system and reduce the increase of an unnecessary load in the communication system by abnormal handover. A method for fast handover in a communication system comprises the following steps of: allowing a serving BS(Base Station)(403) to transmit an MOB_NBR-ADV(Mobile Neighbor Advertisement) message including expected action time information to an MS(Mobile Station)(401); allowing the MS to scan a reference signal transmitted from neighbor BSs through the MOB_NBR-ADV message; allowing the MS to transmit an MOB_HO-IND(Mobile Handover Indication) message including target BS information to the service BS; allowing the service BS to transmit an HO_confirm(Handover Confirm) message to the target BS; allowing the serving BS to transmit pending data to the MS and exchange MS service information with a neighbor BS1(405); allowing the MS to synchronize a BS change; allowing the neighbor BS1 to perform scheduling; allowing the neighbor BS1 to transmit an UL_MAP(Uplink Map) message including a fast ranging information element to the MS; and allowing the MS to transmit a RNG-REQ(Ranging Request) to the neighbor BS1.
