A plasma display apparatus is provided to prevent an over-current from being inputted to a source capacitor by forming a recovering path from a panel to the source capacitor in advance. A plasma display apparatus includes a panel, an energy recovering unit(41), and a sustain pulse applying unit(42). The energy recovering unit includes a source capacitor, which recovers energy from the panel and supplies stored energy to the panel during a sustain period. The sustain pulse applying unit supplies a sustain pulse, which is repeatedly increased and decreased between a maximum sustain voltage and a sustain minimum voltage, to the panel during the sustain period. Before the voltage of the panel is reached up to the maximum sustain voltage, a path for recovering energy is formed from the panel to the source capacitor.
