PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an AF control method and an AF control device in a camera equipped with an AF function using a "hill-climbing control" by which accurate AF control is achieved by associating a contrast evaluated value with a focal position accurately by easy processing, in an imaging apparatus which stores and reads out charge as image data in an imaging device by scanning in pixel row units. SOLUTION: The driving period of a focus lens is controlled according to delay time calculated based on the charge storage time of the imaging device from a charge readout synchronizing signal in each frame of the imaging device. The delay time is calculated by an expression (1): Delay=A+(V-Ts)/2 when the interval of the vertical synchronizing signal for storing and reading out the charge in each imaging frame is defined as V, time to store and read out the charge of one line in each imaging frame is defined as Ts, and time required for finishing reading out a center line from the vertical synchronizing signal in an area corresponding to a window for AF on the imaging device is defined as A.
