PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of operating an engine having a cylinder operable in an HCCI mode, which can attain both improvement in fuel economic property by charged air leaner than stoichiometric one and effectiveness of catalyst which tends to deteriorate according to this at high level. SOLUTION: The method comprises steps of: injecting a first amount of fuel into the cylinder (216); auto-igniting a first mixture of air and first amount of fuel by compressing the first mixture (218); injecting a second amount of fuel into the cylinder after auto-igniting the first mixture (222); burning a second mixture of the second amount of fuel and gasses from auto-ignition of the first mixture (224); holding an intake valve of the cylinder closed between auto-igniting the first mixture and burning the second mixture (218-224); and exhausting the burned second mixture (226).
