The method involves supplying an internal combustion engine with gaseous fuel such as natural gas, or liquid fuel e.g. diesel or petrol. A lambda value is determined by a lambda probe. An error suspicion or an approximate error is sorted, when the engine is supplied with the gaseous fuel, and/or the lambda value is larger than a preset threshold value, and/or a control factor of a lambda value is larger than another preset threshold value, and/or a miss fire is detected already during the combustion.
