A backlight unit for a display panel is provided to achieve uniform illumination by diffusing laser light to a light guide plate as using a laser light source having superior system configuration efficiency and color reproducibility. A laser light source(100) generates laser light. A light guide plate(300) has a reflection pattern within it so as to diffuse or scatter the light generated from the laser light source. The laser light source is disposed in a side of the light guide plate, and has a diffuser(200) for diffusing or scattering the laser light, applied to the side of the light guide plate, between the laser light source and the light guide plate. A backlight unit further comprises a reflection plate(307), a first diffusion sheet(310), first and second prism sheets(320,330) and a second diffusion sheet(340).
