PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compression testing method eliminating an error occurring due to the contact between a sample and a jig, the rigidity of a device, etc. and capable of giving high precision measurement results of compression displacement. SOLUTION: In the compression testing method, the displacement of the sample is determined by pressing the columnar sample, and measuring the displacement of the pressure piston, and a compression static modulus of elasticity of the material of the sample is thereby determined. First, for each of first and second samples made of the same material and having different lengths, the relationship between stress applied to the sample and the displacement is determined. ValueΔσ<SB>s</SB>(L<SB>1</SB>-L<SB>2</SB>) obtained by multiplying a difference (the length L<SB>1</SB>of the first sample - the length L<SB>2</SB>of the second sample) by a stress differenceΔσ<SB>s</SB>is divided by a difference (the displacementΔL<SB>1</SB>of the first sample - the displacementΔL<SB>2</SB>of the second sample).
