PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external resonator-type laser apparatus oscillating in a desired mode without changing the light strength of an output light, and to provide a modal control method of the external resonator laser apparatus. SOLUTION: This laser apparatus comprises: a laser light source 11 oscillating in a multi-mode; a diffraction grating 13 receiving a 0-order light 21 irradiated from the laser light source 11 to return the diffracted light thereof to the laser light source 11; a piezo actuator 41, shaft 41a and lever 42 for changing the wavelength of the diffracted light returned to the laser light source 11; a wedge prism 16, mode detecting detector 17 and controlling part 30 for detecting a mode hop signal corresponding to a mode of an output light irradiated externally from the laser light source 11; and a controlling part 30 for controlling the piezo actuator 41 corresponding the mode hop signal for obtaining the output light in a desired mode.
