PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original detecting device having improved accuracy in detecting an original placed on an original platen while preventing rear-reflection. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 10 using the original detecting device includes: an original cover 22; reflection type optical sensors 51 to 54; and a shielding sheet 58. The original cover 22 is configured oscillatably between an open position opening the surface of the original platen 21 and a closed position covering the surface of the original platen 21 by taking one end part thereof as a fulcrum. The reflection type optical sensors 51 to 54 including a light emitting element 511 and a light receiving element 512 are disposed on the bottom surface 22A facing the original platen 21 of the original cover 22, so as to detect the presence or absence of the original 61 on the original platen 21 in a state where the original cover 22 is inclined to the original platen 21 by a prescribed angle. The shielding sheet 58 is configured to shield the reflection type optical sensors 51 to 54 when the original cover 22 is located at the closed position, and to expose the reflection type optical sensors 51 to 54 at least when the original cover is inclined by the prescribed angle.
