A winding/coiling method by which strip-material (21) is wound up into a coil (22) with a coiling device (11), rotatably driven by a drive (24) about a winding axle (18). The free end of the material (21) is fed towards the winding axle (18) and is fixed on the axle (18) by a retention device (35) having an insertion gap extending along the winding axle (18) for guiding the free end for fixing on the retention device (35). The winding device (11) is driven until a desired amount of coiled material is achieved. An independent claim is given for a winding/coiling device for winding strip-type material.
