The method involves detecting an electrical impedance between two electrodes by using a control and evaluation unit that is connected with a patient body over the electrodes. The control and evaluation unit is provided for conducting an alternating voltage through the body and for detecting a measure of the impedance between the electrodes. The detected values for the measure of the impedance is automatically recorded and evaluated as function of the time for determining a breathing rate of the patient.
