The method involves determining a characteristic value that depends on a behavior of a driver during operation of control unit of a vehicle e.g. person or commercial motor vehicle. An authenticity value is computed from the characteristic value and from a reference value, which is stored in a memory, where the authenticity value is calculated using a neural network and/or a fuzzy logic. The authenticity value is correlated with a probability in such a manner that the driver is identical with the authorization. Signals are delivered when the authenticity value lies outside of preset interval. An independent claim is also included for a device to authenticate a driver of a vehicle.
