Additives useful in attenuating the crosslinking time of sparingly solubl e borate-based minerals and the use of those additives in oil well fracturin g fluids and methods of fracturing a formation are described wherein the wel lbore fracturing fluid comprises a viscosifying polysaccharide, a sparingly soluble borate-based mineral and a metal sequestering agent.
