PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase use efficiency of a plurality of temporary disk/defect management areas (TDMA) provided in a disk. SOLUTION: A recording medium includes a temporary management area and a final management area. A system has: a recording and reproducing apparatus including a writing and reading unit that creates a first indicator for specifying a current temporary management area and creates a second indicator showing whether or not the recording medium is closed, and a controller that controls the writing and reading unit and creates the first indicator and the second indicator; and a host apparatus that is configured to transmit to the recording and playing back apparatus a writing and reading command for recording data in the recording medium or reproducing data in the medium. The controller controls the writing and reading unit and creates the first indicator and the second indicator in one of the temporary management area.
