摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material which is a transparent material usable for optical application, has both properties of low water absorption of inorganic glass and moldability at a low temperature of plastics, and yet has strength durable for ordinary use. SOLUTION: An organic inorganic hybrid glassy material is a composite material including a polycondensation substance of an organoalkoxysilane represented by R<SP>1</SP><SB>n</SB>Si(OR<SP>2</SP>)<SB>4-n</SB>, (where R<SP>1</SP>is an organic group, R<SP>2</SP>is a 1-5C alkyl group, and n is 1-2), and a polystyrene wherein the wt.% of the organoalkoxysilane is not less than 30 and not greater than 70, and the wt.% of the polystyrene is not less than 30 and not greater than 70. The material is characterized by having a water absorption of not greater than 0.1% as a saturated water absorption, a visible radiation permeability of not less than 85% through a thickness of 2 mm, and a softening temperature of 100-200°C.
