The filter element (18) has an entrance surface (22) and a withdrawal surface (24), with two groups of channels. The two groups of channels are separated by filter walls (31) of an open-pore material. The filter walls consist of ceramic fibers, which are present in the form of a fiber mat (34). The fibers of the fiber mats of 3 micrometers to 10 micrometers have a thickness, between 3 micrometers and 5 micrometers. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a filter element.
