The method involves bringing fresh gas into a suction cycle in a combustion chamber (2) and producing an ignitable gas mixture in the combustion chamber by inserting a fuel. The gas mixture is compressed in a compression cycle, where the gas mixture is self-ignited towards an end of the compression cycle. The free gas is introduced by a compression device (6) during the suction cycle in the combustion chamber, where the compression device is a turbocharger and a compressor. An internal-combustion engine (1) is operated during a gas cycle with a residual gas storage. An independent claim is also included for a computer program with a program code for executing a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
