<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To embed information for an image reader having a relatively wide read range. <P>SOLUTION: A mCn unit code patterns in which dots are arranged at n places selected from m places are divided into an information pattern indicating information and a plurality of sets of synchronization patterns for fetching information from the information pattern. In a code block for a scanner designed for the scanner, the synchronization pattern belonging to A set is arranged in a block 740 at the upper left, and the synchronization pattern belonging to B set is arranged at a block 744 at the upper left of a code block for a pen designed for a pen device in it. Similarly, in an adjacent code block for the scanner, the synchronization pattern belonging to the A set is arranged in blocks 741-743, and the synchronization pattern belonging to the set B is arranged in a block 745.
