PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve discharge efficiency and centering precision of an electrode for a discharge type lamp. SOLUTION: The electrode 10 for the discharge type lamp is equipped with a discharge part 12 arranged in a glass tube TB and a lead part 14 connected to this, and the lead part 14 has the exterior lead wire 18 and a sealing part 16. The exterior lead wire 18 has a first joining part 18a at one of its end parts. The sealing part 16 is cylindrically formed of a material having a linear expansion coefficient approximated to that of the glass tube TB, arranged in the periphery of the end part of the first joining part side of the exterior lead wire 18 so that thermal expansion displacement is enabled in an axial direction independent from this exterior lead wire 18, and has a second joining part 18a.
