New dyes, e.g. useful in molecular electronics, comprise three perylenetetracarboxydiimide groups bonded to a tetrahydrodibenzo(2,3:4,5)pentaleno(1,6-ab)indene group

Dyes (I) comprising three perylenetetracarboxydiimide groups bonded to a tetrahydrodibenzo[2,3:4,5]pentaleno[1,6-ab)indene group are new. Dyes of formula (I) are new. A(B) 3 (I) A : 4b,8b,12b,12d-tetrahydro-12d-R 1>-dibenzo[2,3:4,5]pentaleno[1,6-ab)indene-2,6,10(or 11)-triyl; B : 1,3,8,10-tetraoxo-9-R 2>-5-R 3>-6-R 4>-11-R 5>-12-R 6>-anthra[2,1,9-def;6,5,10-d'e'f']diisoquinolin-2-yl; R 1>-R 6>= H, halo or 1-37C n-alkyl in which 1-10 CH 2 groups can be replaced by Q and 1-12 H atoms can be replaced by halo, CN or A1; Q : CO, O, S, Se, Te, CH=CH, CH=N, N=CH, CC, phenylene or a divalent pyridine, thiophene, naphthalene, mono or diazanaphthalene, anthracene or mono- or diazaanthracene group; A1 : 1-18C alkyl in which 1-6 CH 2 groups can be replaced by Q and 1-12 H atoms can be replaced by halo, CN or A2; A2 : 1-18C alkyl in which 1-6 CH 2 groups can be replaced by Q; Instead of bearing substituents, the free valences of the CH groups or quaternary C atoms can be coupled in pairs to form rings, e.g. cyclohexane rings. Independent claims are also included for: (1) dyes with three orthogonal chromophores; (2) a process for preparing (I).
