Determining the damping properties of greases comprises introducing a layer of grease between two plates, applying an excitation signal to one plate with an actuator, detecting a response signal from the other plate with a sensor, and determining the frequency characteristic of the transmission path between the actuator and sensor from the excitation and response signals. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for determining the damping properties of greases, comprising a pair of plates, an actuator and a sensor as above and an analyzer for determining the frequency characteristic of the transmission path between the actuator and sensor from the excitation and response signals.
