The method involves finding whether a mobile device has a bearer independent protocol (BIP) function permitting to establish a communication channel and/or a back-up mode. The channel is selected from circuit switched data (CSD), general packet radio service (GPRS) and wireless local area network (WLAN) channels. Data backup is done in a network server according to the backup mode via the communication channel. - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a portable device.
