An apparatus 1 for whitening teeth comprises a source of radiation 5, a body portion 51 and retraction means 4 for separating portions of the wearer's lips. In use, the source directs radiation onto the surface of the teeth through an opening partially defined by the retraction means. The body portion covers the entire opening and is securable relative to the retraction means to allow the wearer whose teeth are being whitened to move freely during the treatment. To effect the whitening process the teeth are pretreated with a whitening solution or gel comprising an active oxidising agent. The gel is warmed by a radiant heat produced by a series of light emitting diodes mounted in the body portion. |
