A digital rights management system for an entertainment device is disclosed. The entertainment device receives media data, e.g. audio segments, from a media data source. The entertainment device has storage means for storing the media data. The period of time during which the media data may be accessed is limited. In one embodiment the entertainment device and the media data source are both games consoles used by respective users in a collaborative remix or jamming session. The console of a first user sends audio segments to the console of a second user and each user selects audio segments to contribute to the jamming session. For example one user might control drums and bass, and the other melody and vocals (see Fig. 5). The console which receives the audio segments only allows access to the audio segments for a limited duration. This may be the period of time during which the two consoles are connected to each other or it may be a predetermined period. In another embodiment, usage rights are communicated from the media data source to the entertainment device by means of a "signature" which comprises hardware identity, account identity and time limit information (see Fig. 10). This information may be hashed. The "signature" may further comprise an encryption key which can be used by the entertainment device to decrypt media data transmitted from the data source in encrypted form. The "signature" may be encrypted using a private key. |
