A flow-cooled magnet system has a cooling system and a magnet 4 for generating a magnetic field in a 'target' region, such as a device, a sample, or an organism. The cooling system has a coolant flow path, and the flow path has a first part 21 arranged in thermal communication with the magnet and a second part 25 in thermal communication with the target region. Both the magnet and target region are cooled by the flow of coolant in the first and second parts of the cooling system, and the first part may be upstream from the second part. In use, the target region may retain a sample in a sample holder 12, and a heater 16 may also be provided such that the combination of the heater and the cooling system permits the target region to be held at a predetermined temperature. The magnet may be contained within a cryostat 2 which has at least one radiation shield 26, and the radiation shield may be in thermal communication with a third part 24 of the cooling system flow path, arranged downstream from the first part. The coolant may be supplied from a reservoir 20 and either vented or recovered and returned to the reservoir for re-use. |
