A method to generate multi-channel audio signals from stereo signals is provided to recombine the audio signals for generation in other acoustic systems by using a spatial decomposition method. A method to generate multi-channel audio signals from stereo signals includes the steps of: calculating one or more independent acoustic subbands indicating independent signal components between input subbands by using linear coupling between the input subbands; calculating one or more localized independent acoustic subbands indicating signal components belonging to one or more input subbands and one or more direction factors indicating a ratio of the signal components belonging to two or more input subbands by using the linear coupling of the input subbands; generating output subbands,; and converting the output subbands into audio signals of a time domain. The multi-channel audio signals have output channels more than or equal to input channels from multiple input audio signals.
