A method and an apparatus for decoding an audio signal are provided to produce the output channels with the same as the number of speakers from the down-mix audio signal. An encoding device(100) includes a down-mix member(110) and a spatial information extraction member(120). A decoding device(200) includes an output channel producing member(210) and a modified spatial information producing member(220). The down-mix member down-mixes the multi-channel audio signal and produces the down-mix audio signal. The spatial information extraction member extracts the spatial information from the multi-channel audio signal. The modified spatial information producing member discerns the type of the modified spatial information by means of the spatial information and produces the discerned type modified spatial information on the basis of the spatial information. The output channel producing member produces the output channel audio signal from the down-mix audio signal by means of the modified spatial information.
