An extract of Zanthoxylum piperitum DC or a compound isolated therefrom is provided to inhibit the activity of acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase(ACAT) effectively, thereby being usefully used for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases induced by synthesis and accumulation of cholesteryl ester. A composition for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases such as hyperlipidemia, coronary artery heart disease, arteriosclerosis and myocardial infarction comprises an extract of Zanthoxylum piperitum DC, which is obtained by extracting aerial parts or pericarps of the Zanthoxylum piperitum DC with water or an organic solvent such as alcohol or acetone, or a compound isolated from the extract represented by a formula(1)(wherein R1 is a group(1) or a group(2), R2 is H, OH or OAc, and n is 0 or 1).
