A plasma display apparatus and a driving method thereof are provided to prevent a false contour by representing gray scales in sub-fields to be successively turned on. A plasma display apparatus includes a plasma display panel, a controller(200), and drivers(300,400,500). The plasma display panel includes plural row and column electrodes, and plural discharge cells formed by the row and column electrodes. The controller divides the row electrodes into plural column groups, divides at least one of the plural column groups into plural sub-groups, sets plural address periods corresponding to the plural sub-fields in respective sub-fields, and sets a sustain period after the address periods. The drivers select non-light emitting cells among light emitting cells of the sub-fields corresponding to the address periods. The controller includes first and second sub-groups of the sub-groups alternately having at least one of row electrodes.
