PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide powder for compacting having satisfactory fluidity, fillable at a high density, and also made into a compact having high density when being compacted, and to provide a method for producing the powder for compacting. SOLUTION: The powder for compacting comprises: an iron based particle 10; and a lubricant 20. In the iron based particle 10, provided that surface area is defined as S[m<SP>2</SP>], volume is defined as V[m<SP>3</SP>], BET specific surface area is defined as B[m<SP>2</SP>/g] and true density is defined asρ[g/m<SP>3</SP>], the average value of F expressed by F=(B×V×ρ)/S is 2 to 20. The lubricant 20 is stuck to the surface of the iron based particle 10. In the lubricant 20, the average value of the ratio of the lubricant 20 present at the outside of the convex hull in the iron based particle 10 is≤20%. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
