PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus capable of appropriately suppressing flicker which occurs in a display image when performing backlight reduction and image correction for compensating it in order to save power. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus corrects an image data and controls light source luminance in a light source. A scene change detection means detects scene change in an image data, and an image correction means corrects an image data, and a light source luminance control means controls the light source luminance. A time characteristic control means changes a first time characteristic in change of the light source luminance and a second time characteristic in an image correction amount based on the scene change, and based on this, the time characteristic control means performs filter processing etc. Thereby, since the time characteristic used for each of the light source luminance and the image correction amount is changed according to the scene change of the image, the occurrence of the flicker and response delay are effectively suppressed when the back light reduction and the image correction are performed.
