<p>An MVA type liquid crystal display (LCD) capable of displaying in high contrast ratios. The liquid crystal display comprises strap-like ribs (21b) formed on the first electrode (11) of a liquid crystal layer and band-like slits (22) formed in the second electrode (12) of the liquid crystal layer. The rib (21b) has a side surface in which the tapered angle in the cross section orthogonal to the direction along which the rib extends is 18° or smaller, and is formed of a material having an OD value of 0.8 or higher for the film with a thickness equal to the height of the rib.</p>
