<p>The invention relates to improvements to a lateral impact containment system for vehicles, with high energy absorption and containment capacity, said improvements being characterised in that the system is formed by a vertical post which is bent to form an acute dihedral angle at a certain height, such that the lower segment thereof is vertical and the upper segment thereof is inclined forward with the position of the upper rail also being moved forward in the direction of the traffic. The invention is also characterised in that the system is provided with a continuous horizontal untensioned brace which prevents the post from becoming detached in the event of an impact. The invention is further characterised in that an energy absorbing separator consisting of a rigid part and a deformable part is disposed between the lower rail and the post. In this way, the system has a high capacity for absorbing the energy produced upon vehicle impact and for redirecting same, a high capacity for reducing deceleration levels, a high capacity for controlling the vehicle during and after a collision, thereby reducing the possibility of subsequent undesired vehicle reactions, and a high capacity for controlling the dissipation of the energy absorbed such that the containment system can deform in a similar manner after each impact.</p> |
