<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection type polarizer which is easily manufactured and has high performance. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizer includes: a light-transmissive base plate 8; a diffractive grating 12 formed on the light-transmissive base plate 8 and comprising a plurality of projection parts 9 which are aligned so as to have a period of wavelength of used light or less, each being composed of alternate layers of high refractive index layer 10 and low refractive index layer 11; and middle refractive index regions 14 which are formed on positions between the protrusion parts 9 arranged adjacently to each other in the diffractive grating 12 so as to have portions buried into the light-transmissive base plate 8 and have a refractive index higher than the refractive index of the low refractive index layer 11 and lower than the refractive index of the high refractive index layer 10. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
