PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To contribute in improvement of production efficiency of a plane display device such as PDP by providing a bismuth-based sealing material which does not devitrify by primary firing at 500°C and still suitably flows during secondary firing at 450-500°C. SOLUTION: The bismuth-based sealing material comprises 40-95 wt.% of a bismuth-based glass powder and 5-60 wt.% of a fire proof filler powder, wherein the bismuth-based glass powder contains, as a glass composition, 30-50 mol% of Bi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 10-40 mol% of B<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and 35-50 mol% of ZnO+CuO and contains substantially no PbO.
