<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an obstacle detection system and an obstacle detection method capable of precisely extracting only an obstacle candidate area having high risk of a collision, by precisely acquiring an area showing roadway based on information which can be acquired from an external device, for example, a navigation device or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The presence of an obstacle in an image is detected by acquiring image data imaged with an imaging apparatus for imaging the periphery of a vehicle. Information about the position of the vehicle and the roadway is received from the external device, and an area showing the roadway in the image imaged with the imaging apparatus is estimated, based on the received information about the position of the vehicle and the roadway. Meanwhile, an area showing the roadway is detected based on the image data acquired from the imaging apparatus. The estimated area showing the roadway is superposed on the detected area showing the roadway, an area of difference between both areas is extracted, and the area of difference is specified as an obstacle candidate area. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
