PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas appliance discrimination apparatus and method capable of discriminating each gas appliance and detecting a gas leak, on the basis of the features of a gas flowing in a gas passageway, even when a plurality of appliances are used simultaneously. SOLUTION: The discrimination apparatus includes a gas flow rate detector 1, and a feature extraction means 4 for analyzing data detected by the detector 1 and extracting a feature. The apparatus includes a candidate extraction section 58a which compares an ignition flow rate extracted by the extraction means 4, with a flow rate rise pattern stored in a feature card storage section 51, and extracts a candidate for a gas appliance being used or a gas leak, a grouping section 58b for grouping extracted candidates, and an appliance discrimination means 5 which compares for each group a feature extracted by the extraction means 4 with the feature data stored in the storage section 51, and discriminates a gas appliance being used or a gas leak.
