The method involves providing individual information of animals, and sorting the animals into groups (G, G1-G4, G1.1-G1.3, G2.1-G2.3) according to a predetermined sorting criteria e.g. milking barness. The animals exhibiting comparable characteristics are assigned to the groups, and the groups are milked in separate group milking areas (MB1-MB13). Automatic animal recognition takes place before sorting the animals, where the animal recognition takes place contactlessly. An independent claim is also included for a device for milking animals.
