A discharge lamp lighting apparatus is provided with an inverter (4) for converting a direct current voltage into a high frequency voltage; a low voltage insulating transformer (T1) having a primary winding (P1) connected to an output terminal of the inverter (4); and a plurality of step up transformers (T2-T5). A first series circuit wherein primary windings (P2-P5) of the step up transformers (T2-T5) of the step up transformers are connected in series is connected to a secondary winding (S1) of the insulating transformer (T1). One or more discharge lamps (11-14) are connected to secondary windings (S2-S5) of the step-up transformers (T2-T5).
