A method and an apparatus for controlling a fan motor of a refrigerator are provided to notify a user of an error of the fan motor when a rotational speed of the fan motor is abnormal. A method for controlling a fan motor of a refrigerator comprises the steps of detecting an RPM of the fan motor, which is driven for heat exchange, for a predetermined time(S103), comparing the detected RPM of the fan motor with a predetermined reference value(S104), and determining the state of the fan motor according to the comparison result(S106). If the state of the fan motor is determined as an abnormal state, a signal is output to notify a user of the abnormal state of the fan motor(S108). The predetermined reference value in a range of 350 to 4000 RPM, and the fan motor is determined as the abnormal state if the RPM of the fan motor is less than 350 RPM or more than 4000RPM.
