PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition based on NR and BR and being useful for a studless tire tread excellent in breaking performance on an ice- or snow-covered road. SOLUTION: The rubber composition for studless tire treads is obtained by kneading a masterbatch prepared by compounding below 50 pts.wt. rubber component comprising a solid natural rubber or a mixture containing at least 50 wt.% solid natural rubber and other diene rubbers and adding to the rubber component at least 60 wt.% portion of the entire filler to be added to the final rubber composition in the stage of preparing the masterbatch, with a rubber which is at least one member selected from among a polybutadiene rubber, a natural rubber, a styrene/butadiene copolymer rubber and a polyisoprene rubber and contains such an amount of the polybutadiene rubber that the total of this and the polybutadiene rubber (when present) in the masterbatch is 50 pts.wt. or larger.
