PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-modulating material by a guest host method excellent in light modulation, heat resistance and moist heat durability. SOLUTION: This light-modulating material is provided by equipping a liquid crystal layer containing a dichroic pigment expressed by general formula (1) [wherein, R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>are each independently H or a substituent, but at least one of the R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>and R<SP>7</SP>is a substituent expressed by -(Het)<SB>m</SB>-ä(B<SP>1</SP>)<SB>p</SB>-(Q<SP>1</SP>)<SB>q</SB>-(B<SP>2</SP>)<SB>r</SB>}<SB>n</SB>-C<SP>1</SP>; Het is O, S or NR; R is H, an alkyl, an aryl or a heteroaryl; B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>are each independently a divalent aryl, a heteroaryl or a cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Q<SP>1</SP>is a divalent linking group; C<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an alkoxy, an acyl, an alkoxycarbonyl or an acyloxy; (m) is 0 or 1; (p), (q), (r) are each any of 0 to 5 integer; and (n) is any of 1 to 3 integer, but (p+r)×(n) is 3 to 10.] and a host liquid crystal, and transmitts incident light.
