PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability by accurately detecting the curve of a liquid such as ink droplets at a low cost without complicating a structure. SOLUTION: The liquid discharge failure detecting unit acquires light reception data and detects a discharge failure of a liquid such as ink droplets by directing laser beams (beams of light) LB1 and LB2 emitted from laser diodes (light emitting elements) LD1 and LD2 in the direction intersecting the discharge direction of ink droplets 34 by the light receiving elements LD1 and LD2 by receiving laser light emitted from the laser diodes. The poor liquid discharge detector is provided with a plurality of laser light, laser light LB1 and LB2 for example, which intersects the liquid discharge direction of ink droplets from mutually different directions in a state of intersecting nearly at right angles.
